The chief component in Rioja, Tempranillo is found across Spain in a wide variety or styles, weights and wine making methods from young light to oaky and heavy.

Tempranillo is mid weight in acidity, tannin and alcohol, amenable to blending with a number of bedfellows, loves a bit of oak but is happy without and is generally delicious! It straddles the red fruit spectrum. Rioja is its most famous expression, but increasingly popular is the showy & flambouyant examples from Ribera Del Duero.
