Arneis is a white Italian wine grape variety, originally from the Piedmont region where it has been grown for many centuries. It is a variety with a fascinating history with written reference to the variety as far back as 1432. Usually grown in association with the other famous Piedmontese variety Nebbiolo, Arneis is often used with the red grape to soften the somewhat harsh tannin of Nebbiolo.
Arneis has adapted very well to the Mt Barker area of the Great Southern wine region. The cooler nights experienced in this area help maintain the bright acidity that makes the wine so attractive.
