In 1671 the first van Niekerk set foot in the Cape of Good Hope. Cornelis van Niekerk, an 11-year-old Dutch boy, arrived with nothing more than the clothes on his back.
Years later, now a prosperous farmer, Cornelis and eight others took a stance against the Capes corrupt governor by refusing to sell their wine to the dishonest regime. Instead, they sold directly to passing ships at a much fairer price. This landed them in a Mauritian jail where Cornelis passed away – unjustly branded as one of The 9 Rebellious Vrijboeren.
His two sons picked up the pieces & through them the van Niekerk family legacy continued.
Grape Varietals & Region:100% Grenache from the Bot River in South Africa.
Grapes were sourced from two neighbouring farms on the Swart River road just outside of Botriver. The first pick was from a new block on a farm called Nabot and the second pick from the dryland bush vine block on the Anysbos farm.
Taste Profile:Red cherry, cranberry and raspberry plus subtle notes of orange, fynbos, musk and earth on the nose. The palate is not too fragile but still remarkably poised – good fruit expression, fresh acidity and powdery tannins
Winemaking Process:45% Whole-bunch naturally fermented Grenache Noir matured in old oak barrels for 10 months before bottling
