Andi Mann, based in Eckelsheim in Rheinhessen, is a prominent figure in Germanys natural wine movement, farming organically with biodynamic practices. His vineyards rest on a tapestry of volcanic porphyry, limestone, rhyolite and sandstone which are all at roughly 150m altitude. He maintains low intervention through hand-harvest, sheep for under-vine soil health, and nurturing wild flora to boost biodiversity and terroir expression.
PurPur Sptburgunder 2021 is made from fully destemmed, hand-picked grapes from these mineral-rich sites. It was fermented on skins for three weeks then aged for two years in oak 75% in large Stckfass barrels (1,200 L) and 25% in traditional 225 L barrels, before being bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulphur. The wine reveals vibrant dark cherry, forest floor, black pepper and subtle herbal layers, with a sleek, mineral-tinged finish. Wonderful with mushroom dishes, grilled lamb, duck breast or aged alpine cheeses.
